Totus Tuus is a summer Catholic youth program dedicated to sharing the Gospel and promoting the Catholic Faith through evangelization, catechesis, Christian witness and Eucharistic worship. The week-long Parish Summer Catechetical Program, provided through the Diocese of Jefferson City, assists parents and parishes in the evangelizing and catechizing of their youth by supplementing the work they are already doing. The methodology, structure, content, and enthusiasm of Totus Tuus is concerned not only with teaching the Faith, but also igniting the hearts of the team members and the young people they encounter. The result has been the formation of young adults who continue to dedicate themselves to the Church’s mission of evangelization.
Totus Tuus Mission
The mission of Totus Tuus is to inspire in young people a true longing for holiness, a deep desire for daily conversion and an openness to their vocation by the constant challenge to give themselves entirely to Christ through Mary and by continually strengthening their prayer lives in imitation of Her.
The Totus Tuus Team
Totus Tuus calls upon college students and seminarians to carry this mission to every young person they encounter in the parish program. Teachers are hired for their energy, enthusiasm, love of the Faith, commitment to spiritual growth, ability to work with a team and a desire to work with youth. Parish catechists are grouped into teams of four, each consisting of two men and two women, and are invited to a different parish every week for seven weeks, where they conduct a week-long "parish mission,” teaching and inspiring the parish’s first through twelfth grade youth. The Sacred Heart Totus Tuus Team for 2019 consists of (from left) Hannah Meyers, Rachel Smith, Joe Powers and Erick Chinchilla. Click here for team member bios.
Totus Tuus Curriculum
The Sacred Scriptures and the Catechism of the Catholic Church provide the foundation of the catechetical instruction of the Totus Tuus summer catechetical program. The 2019 curriculum will focus on the Sacraments and The Sorrowful Mysteries. The 5 Marks of Totus Tuus are:
- Proclamation of the Gospel: To arouse faith
- Explanation: Examination of the reasons for our beliefs
- Christian Witness: An experience of Christian living
- Celebration of the Sacraments: Especially Holy Eucharist and Confession
- Active Witness: Participating in the Missionary Spirit of the Catholic Church
Sacred Heart will need parent and parishioner volunteers to participate and assist at Totus Tuus. It is required that one parish volunteer be present during the sessions during the day and in the evening. We also will need parishioners who can provide team dinners (and Sunday lunch), Saturday-Thursday (excluding Wednesday and Friday). These meals are great opportunities for the team to get to know parents and other parishioners.
Grade School Program
This program is for children going into first through sixth grades. During the week, the children will participate in four classes each day, have the opportunity for Reconciliation, attend daily Mass, learn the Mass parts and liturgical songs, and participate in games, icebreakers, skits, songs, recess, and prayer. The week culminates on Friday with outdoor activities celebrating the accomplishments.
This program is for teens going into seventh through twelfth grade. There is a night of Adoration and the opportunity for Reconciliation, catechetical instruction with witnesses on topics important to young people. Each night also offers fellowship with the team members. Thursday evening is the “fun night” for the teens. What that entails is up to the teenagers themselves, along with the team.
